Vendor Spotlight - Get to Know Greenwood Cider
/Summer is just around the corner so we thought it was a great time to introduce you to some of the great cider you can get at our markets, meet Greenwood Cider.
Who is Greenwood Cider
Greenwood Cider, is owned and operated by Andy Short and Marshall Petryni with help from cidermaker and certified pommelier, Maia Wohlert.
What are some of the changes you have seen around the cider industry over the years?
We have been in business for ten years and in that time, the cider industry has grown a lot but has also seen a lot of consolidation with large companies becoming even larger by producing cider for smaller companies. The importance of craft has been in decline as people chase trends in this growing market.
Why is sourcing from local farms and farmers markets important?
None of what we do happens without farmers or farmers markets. We do not own an orchard, so we must source apples and pears from our farmer friends around the area.
As a cidery without a taproom, the farmers markets are our "taproom", where our customers can sample the latest releases and talk cider with us directly. It also ties us into a caring and vibrant community full of hard-working, diverse, and dedicated farmers, crafters, and producers. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?!
What impact has the relationships you have developed with local farms had on your success?
As a small scale cider producer that presses and produces everything ourselves, the relationship we have with farmers and orchardists has helped us be nimble and unique, allowing us to produce some of the world's best cider from some of the world's best apples.
We take a hybrid approach to cider by making more approachable, straight-apple styles or ciders with fun fruit additions, but also produce one-of-a-kind heirloom apple ciders because we work directly with farmers and orchardists.
Essentially, our relationship with many different farmers has allowed us to put our eggs in multiple baskets and see what works for us and for our suppliers.
What are some of the farms Greenwood Cider sources from? Are there any unique aspects to Greenwood Cider's sourcing?
We work with so many farms, but to name a few: Frog Song, Monte Vista, Alvarez, Tonnemaker, Hayton, Northwest Wild, Sidhu. We also source apples from local nonprofit City Fruit as well as glean some ourselves from neighbors, public spaces, and forgotten orchards.
What are some highlights of what Greenwood Cider offers at the Farmers Markets?
At our farmers market booth, we offer our full range of ciders, including ones that you can rarely find in stores. These include award-winning ciders like our Scrumpy or Kingston Black, and our more standard offerings like Lingonberry or Huckleberry.
And don't forget, we also offer samples to any 21 and over!
